He leaves behind the love of his life, Odette “Odie” (Nichols) Toomey, his three daughters, Cynthia Ullrich and husband Rick, Kathy Bentley and husband Bob, and Theresa Tease. He was the beloved “Giddoo” to Alexandra, Paul, Nicholas, Adam and wife Luciana, Anna and husband Matt, and Grace, as well as his great granddaughter, Emma. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Marie Sarkis, his brother-in-law, Al Mancini, and his many nieces and nephews and their families. Joe was predeceased by his brothers, Howard and Peter, his sisters, Doris and Regina, his son-in-law, Bobby, his brothers-in-law, Nick, Johnny and Ed, and his sisters-in-law, Celia, Dodie, Barb and Virginia. Joe was born in Windham, CT on March 21, 1922 and lived in Connecticut and Brooklyn, NY, as a child. After high school, he served in the Army and was deployed to the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he came to live in Springfield where he met Odie one very special New Year’s Eve. They were married in 1950 and raised their family in Springfield. As a young man, Joe enjoyed playing tennis and working on cars, but always his greatest joy was spending time with his family. When his children and nieces and nephews were young, he was the one who gathered everyone to go to the zoo, feed the ducks and go ice skating, among other things. He loved the picnics our extended family had at Forest Park, Shaker Lake and the day trips to the Connecticut shore. As the family grew, he was able to recount the names of all of his grand nieces and nephews and even all of their children. He and Odie took trips to Las Vegas, Saratoga, Atlantic City and Italy with their dear friends, Charlie and Mary Suse and Chet and John Sarage. They also traveled to Florida several times to visit their beloved friends, Joe and Dee Gustin. Joe spent many years helping to run Bingo at St. Anthony’s Church and then meeting every Tuesday at Friendly’s for breakfast with the Bingo Bunch. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, services will be held at a later date. St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 is assisting his family.
