New Bedford – Almerinda (Soares) Sousa, age 83, of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel Sousa.
Almerinda was born on April 23, 1937 in Lagoa, Sao Miguel, Azores to the late Manuel Soares Lopes and Maria (da Luz) Soares. She moved to this area in January 1981 with her family and has lived here since. She had been a stitcher for a local garment manufacturer for many years. She was also a member of the Groupo do Oracao.
Almerinda is survived by her children, Jose Maria Sousa and his wife Anna of the Azores, Margarida Alves and her husband Pedro of Rhode Island, Maria Manuela Barbosa and her husband Bento of Dartmouth and Ana Maria Laroche and her husband Steve of Fall River; grandchildren, Catarina Sousa, Ruben Sousa, Sonia Alves, Monica Alves, Pedro Alves, Brian Barbosa, Christopher Barbosa, Cyrena Rua, Cameron Rua and Savanha Laroche, 7 great-grandchildren and her sister, Maria da Luz Pacheco of New Bedford. She was predeceased by 8 siblings.
Almerinda’s visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Perry Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Her funeral will take place on Monday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 8:45 A.M. and followed with a Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
All attendees are required by current mandated restrictions to wear a face covering at all times, to social distance 6 feet and to please refrain from any close physical contact. Attendance in the funeral home will be limited in order to meet the mandated capacity restrictions and could result with a wait time outside of the funeral home.
