John Lee Chew, 68, of Fairhaven died January 22, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Eleanor (Valente) Chew.
Born in Boston, he was the son of Bertha (Felt) Chew of Weymouth and the late John Chew, he was raised in Randolph and lived in Holbrook before moving to Fairhaven 15 years ago.
John worked as a Dispatcher for Holbrook Fire prior to his career at DOC and as a Call Fire Fighter. He was employed as a Corrections Officer for the Commonwealth of Mass. at MCI Walpole and MCI Plymouth attaining the rank of Sergeant. While in corrections he served as a Special Police Officer with the Holbrook Police Department and led the Holbrook Auxiliary Police Department for several years. Upon retirement he was a security guard for US Security and Securitas and a residential counselor for Old Colony YMCA.
He was a member of the Holbrook Sportsmen’s Club.
In his youth he was a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement he was quite proud of.
Survivors include his wife Eleanor, daughter Jennifer Chew of Fairhaven; his brothers Joseph Chew (Martha) of North, SC; David (Eileen) of Randolph and sisters Mildred Falzone (Charles) of Battlefield, MO and Anna Johnston (Stephen) of Walterboro, SC; brother-in-laws: Edward Valente of Deltona, FL, Kenneth Valente of Taunton, a sister- in-law Ann Valente of Taunton and several nieces and nephews.
He was an active member of Hope Evangelical Community Church in N. Dartmouth, MA. where he served in a variety of positions.
His Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 5th at 11 AM in the Hope Evangelical Community Church, 88 Hathaway Rd. Dartmouth. His family will receive guests at church from 10 - 11 AM prior to his service.
