Richard A. Ross, a lifelong resident of Blauvelt, NY, died at age 72 in his home on January 19, 2021. Richard was born on June 16, 1948, the son of Arthur N. Ross and Louise K. Hoffmann. After graduating from Tappan Zee High School, Richard was drafted into the Army in 1969. He was posted to Ft. Bliss, Texas near El Paso. After he was honorably discharged in 1971, he returned to Blauvelt where he obtained a position at the Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, NY. Richard worked there as a Transportation Supervisor and Mechanic until he retired.
Richard and his family were members of the historic Greenbush Presbyterian Church in Blauvelt. He was a devoted caregiver to his mother at the end of her life. He enjoyed creating stained-glass artwork and did several beautiful windows on commission.
Richard served as an active member of the Blauvelt Volunteer Fire Company for 24 years. He joined the BVFC on January 9, 1973 and went on to serve as 2nd Lt., 1st Lt. and Captain in the mid-1970s. He was appointed to the EQ squad by Chief Bosco in 1978 and served with the BVFC Fire Police from 1989 to 1995. Richard was a member of the Rockland County Fireman’s Association and the Rockland County Fire Police Association.
Richard’s happiest times were spent visiting his beloved Rivermede, the Ross family home and farm in Keene Valley, NY. As a child there, he developed a love of the outdoors and all things Adirondack. He spent many happy hours exploring the Park from his home base, traveling the local byways and hiking.
Richard is predeceased by his sister Melody Donohue. He is survived by his sister Margot Ross, nephews James and Jason Donohue, and niece Malorie Donohue.
