William Welsh Jr. of Mystic passed away peacefully on January 18, 2021 at the age of 92. He was born in Methuen Massachusetts on March 24, 1928 to William Welsh Sr. and Olive (Galloway) Welsh. Bill left Lawrence High School in his senior year to join the Navy in March 1945, graduating on his return from overseas in 1947. TMCS(SS) continued his Navy career serving on LSM 384, USS Diodon, USS Corsair, USS Tirante, USS Skipjack (Chief of the Boat), USS Sturgeon (Chief of the Boat), Sub School staff, and COMSUBRON 10,retiring in 1971. He was a member of SUBVETS and the Holland Club. After the Navy he was employed by the Town of Groton, State of Connecticut (Avery Point), and 13 years at Electric Boat as a Senior Engineering Assistant. Bill was an active member of the Groton Senior Center, serving as past president of Club55 and the Wounded Warrior fund, making many lifelong friends. Upon his retirement he discovered his love of woodcarving, receiving blue ribbons for many of his bird carvings at competitions. He was a member of the Connecticut and Mystic Woodcarvers.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Ruth, married for 67years, also son James and wife Susan, grandchildren Patrick and wife Heather, Kevin and partner Chrisoula, Timothy, Sarah and husband William, and 3 great grandchildren Elianna, Jackson, and Mila. He was predeceased by his brother James.
The family would like to thank the Visiting Nurse Association, Beacon Hospice, and the dedicated staff of Lawrence and Memorial Hospital 4.1 for their exceptional care of Bill.
Bill's family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday, January 27, from 11am to 12 noon at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. All are welcome to attend a Graveside Service with full military honors immediately following at 12:30pm in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic
