Robert J. McIntosh, 77, of Manchester died March 16, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Manchester after a long illness. He was a resident of Manchester for many years.
Born in Astoria, NY on March 26, 1928, he was the son of Robert and Julia (Sheehan) McIntosh. He grew up in Astoria and joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a young man. Those who knew Robert know that the Marine Corps was his life. He'd often say "Once a Marine, Always a Marine!"
Robert enjoyed a long and distinguished military career, serving his country in World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. He was the recipient of many medals and citations; among them were the Purple Heart with one gold star, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with three bronze stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. In peacetime he served his country as a Marine Corps Recruiter, Brig Sergeant at Portsmouth Naval Prison and as Provost Sergeant at Cherry Point MCAS in North Carolina.
Robert retired from active duty in 1968 and began working as an executive for the Greater Lowell Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Robert was also employed for many years as a Sales Representative for Nashua Corporation. Robert also worked for many years at Nautilus North in Manchester, developing a cardiac rehab exercise programs for those, like himself, who'd been through heart surgery. Robert also served as an advisor to our Congressional Representatives in reviewing and recommending candidates for the Annapolis Naval Academy.
For many years, Robert was also very active with the Manchester Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) often organizing the annual luncheon on the Marine Corps anniversary.
Robert was well loved by his many friends and family. His surviving family includes four children, Ellen Stem of New Jersey, Gary McIntosh of Rochester, Stephen McIntosh of Loomis, CA and Ruthie Durand of Hooksett; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday March 21, 2006 at Holy Rosary Church, 21 Main St., Hooksett, NH. Burial with military honors was at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Route 3, Boscawen, NH.
