On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, Katie Serio, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away at the age of 91.
Katie was born on September 21, 1929 in Herzberg, Germany, to Herbert and Edith (Vogel) Maass. She came to Boston, Massachusetts in 1951 where she worked as a governess for a family in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts for a few years. This period shaped her and began her life in America. In 1953, she married Vincent Serio. They raised two daughters: Lisa and Linda, and one son, Roberto in Medford, Massachusetts.
Parenting is hard work. It’s all the more difficult because none of us is perfect. But the love she had for her children was far more important than “getting it right.”
Katie had a passion for children, travel and the outdoors. Her favorite seasons were fall and winter. Christmas was her favorite holiday with Advent Wreath, Advent Calendar and German Christmas carols. She took the best of German and Italian cuisine and made the most of very little. Walking the streets of Medford, skating at Flynn rink or wandering the Fells - these simple activities gave her joy and longevity. She was known for her charm, her beautiful accent, and her kind and compassionate spirit.
Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent and her brother in Germany, Horst. She is survived by her brother in Germany Gunter and , her three children, Lisa, Roberto, and Linda, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her wake will be held on Sunday, January 17th, 2021, in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, Massachusetts from 2:00pm-4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation (parkinson.org) or call 1-800-708-7644.
