Paxton – John (Jack) J. Barry, 94, of Paxton and formerly of Worcester, died on Saturday, January 9th at home with his family.
Mr. Barry was married for 65 years to the late Bernice M. (Fernane) Barry who died in 2015. He is survived by a daughter, Kathy A. Card and her husband, Roland of Paxton with whom he lived; a son, James E. Barry of Worcester; a daughter-in-law, Linda Barry of Worcester, a sister, Helen McCarthy of Vernon, CT; six grandchildren, Nicole and LeeAnn Card of Paxton with whom he lived, Ashley Barry and her husband, Ryan Severance of Norwood, MA, Emilie Koscenski and her husband, Will of Milford, MA, and Alyson Wytas and her husband, Jon of Antioch Illinois; and Elizabeth Barry of Worcester. He also leaves a great granddaughter Olivia and a niece and nephew.
John was born in Worcester, son of the late Michael and Agnes (Breen) Barry and is also predeceased by a son, Stephen Barry who died in 2019. Mr. Barry proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. General R.E. Callan.
He worked for 38 years at the former Thom McAn shoes in Worcester and upon retiring he went to work for the Wachusett Regional School District at Wachusett High School. John developed a special bond with the students at Wachusett High and he became affectionately known to the students as “Gramps”. He was inducted into the Wachusett Regional High School Hall of Fame in 2002 and presented with the Mountaineer Award in appreciation for his dedicated service and support to the student athletes.
John was a big fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed taking trips to Foxwoods. John loved spending time with his family and being at family events where he was the life of the party. John loved taking walks in the neighborhood and enjoyed talking with all the people he met.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 19th at 10 AM in Saint Columba Church 10 Richards Avenue Paxton (Please go directly to church). Burial will take place in Saint John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 18th from 5 to 7 PM in the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond St. Worcester. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Barry may be made to VNA Care Network 120 Thomas St. Worcester, MA 01608.
Social distancing guidelines and face coverings in accordance with CDC guidelines will be required for attendance at the funeral services. If you are unable to attend the funeral mass for Mr. Barry it will be available to watch on Tuesday, January 19th any time after 3 PM by visiting his obituary on the funeral home website.
