LOWELL Joseph Francis ‘Joey’ Furtado, 68 of Lowell, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Lowell General Hospital.
He was born in Lowell on September 24, 1952 and was a son of the late Joseph F. Furtado and the late Patricia A. (Hantzes) Furtado Martin. He was raised in Lowell, where he attended the area schools.
Joey was a member of the Lawrence Street Primitive Methodist Church. He was a music lover of all music, especially Jimi Hendrix, and he was a gifted guitarist. Although music was his favorite, he also enjoyed studying history, especially WWII era battleships and other militaria.
Mr. Furtado was employed as a Train Conductor for Amtrak on the Lowell to North Station route for over 30 years until his retirement in 1996. In his retirement he enjoyed working as a handyman and helping anyone out with small jobs.
Joey is survived by his son, Eric L. Furtado of Lowell; and his siblings, Deborah A. Buretta and her husband, Tom of Chelmsford, Helen T. Clements and her husband, Roy of FL, Kevin Furtado and his wife, Annemarie of Bradford, and Sandra Usher of Lowell. He also leaves behind his circle of friends, inclduding his close friends, Anne Coakley of Lowel her daughter, Sarah Coakley and her husband, Alex Ste. Marie, Jimmy Peddy and and his extended family including his aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
