Ronald “Lefty” Louis Boucher of Mystic died Tuesday at Avalon in Mystic after a long battle with dementia. He was born on February 9, 1932 in Lowell, MA to the late Irene and Louis Boucher. His family soon moved to New London, CT and then to Groton, CT where Ronald attended Eastern Point School and Robert Fitch High School. At Fitch High School, he was a member of the honor society, F club, student council; played football, basketball and golf, and graduated with honors in 1950. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Ruth Jenssen. Soon after graduation, Ronald began his long career at Pfizer in Groton, retiring in the early 90's as general foreman in the Vitamin A department.
Ronald was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, canoeing, cross country skiing and feeding the birds. His passion for sports lasted long after high school, and he was a longtime supporter of the UConn women’s basketball and Ledyard High School football teams, as well as a member of the Groton Senior Bowling League. More importantly, he was devoted to his family, attending regular Sunday breakfasts with his siblings and spending many summers camping with his family (first with his children, then with his grandchildren and great grandchildren) at Hopeville State Park. He was a devout Catholic, and he and Ruth were members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry.
Ronald is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Jenssen Boucher and his six children, Michael (Germaine) Boucher of Groton, CT; Michele Wolfe (Dave Anderson) of Westerly, RI, Susan (Tom) Parker of Greenfield Center, NY, Steven (Mary) Boucher of East Lyme, CT; Kristine Rotter of Saratoga Springs, NY, and Kenneth (Amanda) Boucher of Bellevue, NE; 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his grandson, Jonathan Boucher, his brother, Robert Boucher, and brothers-in-laws John Jenssen, John Simmons and Patrick Michaud. He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Lorraine Simmons and Loretta Michaud of Mystic, CT , Sister Jeanne Boucher of Manchester, NH, and Diane Haines of Groton, CT. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ronald and Ruth recently moved to 186 Jerry Browne Road in Mystic. They previously had their home on Stone Court in Gales Ferry for 62 years.
There will be no service or visitation at this time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ledyard Food Pantry.
