CHICOPEE – Deacon Leo A. Bergeron, 86, of the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, 2020. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving wife, Jackie, and his loving family. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on July 31, 1934, a beloved son of the late Romeo N. and Flora C. (Perreault) Bergeron. He moved with his family to Chicopee Falls at a young age where he was raised and graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield in 1952. He lived in Chicopee Falls for the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Specialist Fourth Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He was employed as a Letter Carrier for 33 years with the United States Postal Service and had worked at the Chicopee Falls Post Office on Main Street, retiring in 1994. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a communicant of the former Saint George Church in Chicopee Falls and currently was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in the Aldenville section of Chicopee. He furthered his education and received an Associate’s Degree from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Springfield on May 5, 2001 and served the Catholic community of Saint George Church in Chicopee Falls until his church closed and later served at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville for many years. He was a member of the Tiger’s Athletic Club in Chicopee Falls and a former member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks. An avid golfer and softball player, he was a member of Ludlow Country Club and played in many local softball leagues. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Joaquina “Jackie” (Augusto) Bergeron. They were married on February 23, 1963 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Ludlow and were blessed with over 57 years of happiness together. He also leaves his many loving and cherished nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Bergeron and Augusto families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother, Romeo “Pete” Bergeron; and his two dear sisters, Theresa Fitzpatrick and Claire Houlihan. His Funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial with United States Army Military Honors and will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home for a walk-through visitation on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance of the funeral home are located in the rear at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (please note that masks are required, social distancing must be observed and funeral home, Church and cemetery attendance are limited due to state regulations.)
