Richard Vincent Cookson, 75, was called away too soon to be with the Lord on December 24th, following COVID complications. He was admitted to Holy Family hospital and passed away only seven days later alone in an ICU room instead of surrounded by family. We are grieving for a man who loved life, conversation, and his family.
Richard was born in Lawrence to Francis & Gertrude Cookson and lived his entire life in Andover. He was a true “townie” and loved sharing the history and evolution of the town with everyone. His days were filled with his daily crossword puzzle, watching Jeopardy (and he was good at it!), geocaching with his wife, listening to music and traveling.
Richard proudly served in the US Army in the Vietnam conflict. He was a CPA and had many clients who looked to him as a tax adviser but more importantly a friend and counselor. His wit, compassion and intelligence endeared him to many.
Above all else, he loved his faith, his family and his six grandchildren. He was known as their “PopPop”. He was married for 51 years to Cynthia (Cindy) Wharton. Recently retired their time was to be spent doing what they loved; traveling, exploring beautiful New England and relaxing.
He will be so greatly missed by his wife, Cynthia (Cindy), his son, Peter and his wife Becky of Woodbridge, VA, daughter Laurie of Andover and daughter Susan and her husband Shaun of Belmont. He cherished every moment of time he spent with his six beloved grandchildren ; Kylee, Ryland, Samuel, Kenzie, Cambree & Lucy. He loved being a “PopPop” and wanted nothing more than to watch his grandchildren laugh and play.
His brothers Jerome, Norman, Francis Jr. and Paul as well as his sisters Joyce and MaryLou, survive Richard. His parents and his brother Kenneth predeceased him.
In honor of Richard we are planning a memorial service in the future, when safe, to celebrate the life of this amazing husband, father, brother, and friend.
In lieu of flowers or donations we ask that everyone who cared for Richard pay it forward by sending someone you love a heartfelt card or bouquet. For additional information, please visit www.burkemagliozzi.com.
