Mr. Joseph L. Callahan, Jr. a resident of Woburn for over forty years passed away unexpectedly following a lengthy illness, Sunday, December 20, 2020, at the Bayberry Assisted living Facility in Tewksbury. He was 71. Joseph was the beloved husband of Dolores M. (Petroni) Callahan and together they shared 42 years of marriage. Born in Boston, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph and Mary R. (Lee) Callahan.
Joseph was raised and educated in Somerville and was a graduate of the former St. Mary High School in Cambridge. He was a proud United States Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War and honorably served from 1968 to 1972 attaining the rank of Sergeant. He completed his reservist obligation in 1974. Joseph worked for over thirty years as a Postal Clerk with the United States Postal Service spending most of his career in Lexington. He retired in 2009. Joseph was avid sports fan and for many years he enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball. He loved to spend time with his family in New Hampshire at Lake Winnipesaukee and also loved animals and caring for his pets. Joseph's greatest joy was his family and he will be fondly be remembered for his unconditional love and devotion to his family.
In addition to his beloved wife Dolores, Joseph is survived by his children; Joseph Callahan III of Woburn, Jeffrey Callahan and his wife Theresa Morelli of North Reading, and Jordan Callahan of Woburn. He was the brother of the late Maureen Mulally formerly of Medford. Cherished nephew of Cecilia Pratt of Dorchester and is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, Tuesday, January 5th, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with military honors and burial at the MA National Cemetery, Bourne, at 1:30 p.m. for those wishing to attend. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Joseph’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452.
