Captain Herbert E. Smith, 85, of Westport, passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at home. He was husband of Judith (Burt) Smith, they shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in Fall River, son of the late Alexander R. and Edale (Warren) Smith, he was a lifelong resident of Westport. Mr. Smith served his country in the United States Army in Korea. He was part of the Noquochoke Orchard family of Westport and a graduate of Westport High School, Class of 1955. He was captain of the fishing vessels Curlew II, Mischief and Buzzards Bay. He loved his winters in Key West, FL and summers on the Westport River. Captain Smith was a member of the Little Compton Game Club. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Westport Social Club.
Including his wife, survivors include his children: Karen L. Smith, Marsha J. Miranda and Alex L. Smith all of Westport; a brother: George Smith of Westport; 2 sisters: Carol Langlois of Dartmouth and Doris Mills of Westport; grandchildren: Jacob Miranda, Jordan Miranda, Amber Smith, Andrew Manchester and Allison Manchester, all of Westport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Alexander R. "Bud" Smith, Jr. and father-in-law of the late Michael S. Miranda.
