Obituary

Willis Eugene “Gene” Sample, 95, of Anderson, passed away December 9, 2020 at Northview Health and Living.
He was born on April 29, 1925 in Anderson, the son of Evan and Esther (Mains) Sample. He was a graduate of Anderson High School and was employed for many years as a machinist with Container Corporation. He married Delpha Estes on October 5, 1946 in Tipton.
Gene served in the United States Army 171st Engineer Combat Battalion in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. During WW II, he served as a parts clerk and rifle sharp shooter, and was decorated with an American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with Three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, WW II Medal and a Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany on November 28, 1944. Gene was able to take an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on April 25, 2016 with his daughter, Pat.
Gene was a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Member. He was a Ham Radio operator-call K9RPZ, and helped many others get their radio license.
He is survived by a daughter, Patricia “Pat” (James) Keogh of Anderson and a son, Robert (Cheryl) Sample of Colorado; four grandchildren, Mary Pat (Jeremiah) Stage, Geoffrey (Whitney) Keogh, Luke Sample and Madelyne Sample; five great grandchildren, Moxie and Magnolia Stage, Jaxson Roemhildt , Ari and Ada Keogh; many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and nine siblings.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 14, 2020 at 2:00 PM at East Maplewood Cemetery with military rites. Please wear a face covering and maintain a safe social distance.
