Dr. Louis A. Gomes, Jr., 80, of New Bedford died December 1, 2020 peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Bridgewater, son of the late Louis A. and Antonia (Ramos) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard and Florida.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Dr. Gomes received his Doctorate of Education from Harvard and had a long career in education retiring as Director of Guidance at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Allendale Country Club and the 9-18. He enjoyed sports, playing racquetball, running 5 K's and he played basketball in his youth.
He was one of the founding members of the United Front Development Corp (Temple Landing) as well as current treasurer.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Brenda Correia of New Bedford; his son, Mark Gomes and his fiancée Cassandra Soares of New Bedford; 5 siblings, Barbara Andrade, Evelyn Glass and Mike Gomes and his wife Vangie, all of Florida, Phillip Gomes and his wife Praee of San Angelo, TX and Phyllis Corchado of Dartmouth; 2 sisters-in-law, Judith Gomes of Connecticut and Patricia Gomes of New Bedford; a grandson, Quintin Mark Gomes; and numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late James Gomes, Anthony Gomes and Robert Gomes.
His visiting hours will be held on Thursday December 3rd from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His service and burial will be private due to Covid guidelines. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 3070 New Bedford, MA 02741.
