DARTMOUTH — Alice Flanders Jeffries, 85, of Padanaram Village, South Dartmouth, died Friday, March 10, 2006, at home after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was the widow of John Amory Jeffries of Milton and former wife of William Beekman Bodine.
Born and raised in Plainfield, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Helen Irons and William David Flanders, who also maintained a home at Salters Point, South Dartmouth, where the family summered for 50 years. She co-authored "A Brief History of Salters Point" with childhood friend Rita E. Steele, late librarian of Millicent Library in Fairhaven, that was republished in 1990 by the Navigator Book Shop of Padanaram Village.
A resident of Padanaram since 1982, she was an active volunteer and supporter of her community. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in the Padanaram, where she served as Deacon, chairman of the Christmas Fair, Sunday School teacher, and on the Women's Committee.
She received a citation from then New Bedford Mayor John Bullard for her years as president and promoter of the Walking Tour Guides of historic New Bedford and as a docent of the Whaling Museum, where she excelled in children's tours.
Mrs. Jeffries was expert at needlepoint and petitpoint, and enjoyed traveling with her family. She also enjoyed her devoted Maltese, Curly. She was a generous and loyal friend to many.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara B. Reideler and her husband, Terrence, of South Dartmouth; a son, William Beekman Bodine Jr., of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister, Nancy F. Sharples of Tiverton, R.I.; numerous nieces and nephews; and several members of the Jeffries family.
She was the sister of the late Helen F. Holmes of South Dartmouth, Elizabeth F. Mercer, formerly of Fairhaven, and Hannah F. Doran of San Diego.
She was cremated and burial is private in Milton Cemetery, Milton, Ma.
