January 6, 1931-November 21, 2020
Beatrice R. Mahoney, 89 of Ventura, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020.
Bea was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, the 4 th and youngest child of Frank and Cecilia Rosinski. She attended Our Lady of Czestochowa Elementary School and Marymount Catholic High School. As early as she can remember, Bea had a passion to become a nurse. She attended St. Alexis Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland. She loved her years in nursing school and maintained friendships with many of her classmates throughout her life. While in nursing school, Bea met her future husband, Richard Mahoney, who was a surgical resident physician at St. Alexis. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Mahoney worked as a surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Bea followed him and worked as a RN at the same facility.
They were married in September, 1953. Their oldest 3 children were born in Massachusetts. In 1959, Dr. Mahoney found a position as a surgeon at Camarillo State Hospital and the family moved to Ventura where Bea has lived for the past 61 years. Bea’s youngest 2 children were born in Ventura. Bea’s life was a life of service and devotion to God and her church. She was an active member of Our Lady of Assumption Church beginning in 1959. Bea often said Assumption Church and her YLI Catholic Women’s Organization were her second family. She attended daily Mass for many years, brought church services to youth detained in Ventura County Juvenile Hall, taught Catholic education classes and was a Eucharistic Minister into her 80s, bringing Communion to the “elderly” in skilled nursing facilities and to those who were homebound. Bea and Dr. Mahoney joined a Catholic Organization called Mission Doctors in the 1980s. Bea taught nursing school, worked in the hospital, and provided clinic services “in the bush” for three years in Papua New Guinea and two years in Cameroon West Africa. In 2005, Bea was a recipient of Benemerenti Award from Pope Benedict for her years of service to the Catholic community.
Bea is survived by her three daughters Janet Huber (John) of Hacienda Heights, Maureen Mahoney (Gary Martinez) of Arroyo Grande, and Kathryn O’Malley (Patrick) of Trinidad, CA. and her two sons, Richard Mahoney Jr. of Camarillo and Thomas Mahoney of Chino. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren; Matthew Mahoney, Steven Rios, Elizabeth Martinez, Sarah Martinez, Christopher Mahoney, Jenna Mahoney, and Jack O’Malley.
