Obituary

Robert E. Callanan, 96 of Whitman, Massachusetts died on November 1st at home after a brief illness.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1923 to Emmett Callanan and Agnes (Sullivan) Callanan, he lived in South Boston and eventually settled in Whitman with his wife and five children.

He was a member of Carpenter’s Local #424, retiring at the age of 62. He volunteered his skills as a master ship builder on projects throughout the years, most notably the Spirit of Massachusetts.

In his younger years he had a great passion for sailing and would later regale his family and friends of his many adventures sailing along the New England coastline. He was a kind and gentle man, and was loved by many.

He was the husband of Leona (Allen) Callanan for over 50 years and was predeceased by his eight siblings and oldest son, Robert Callanan, Jr. He leaves behind three daughters, Kathleen Schmit and her husband James of Whitman, Claire Roppolo and her husband Joseph of Hanson, Brenda Sorrentino of Whitman, and a son Thomas Callanan of Plymouth. He was also a loving grandfather to ten and great grandfather to six.

Services will be private due to COVID 19 limitations.
