Obituary

Leonard Simmons, 97, of New Bedford passed away at home peacefully on Friday October 30, 2020. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa J. Simmons of 73 years.
He was born in Taunton, MA on June 17, 1923. He encountered much adversity during his early years being a child of the Great Depression. He completed the 6th grade and went to work. He joined the US Navy in 1942 where his older brother Gilbert was already enlisted. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 after World War II. Upon his return he worked as a Union Laborer. He married the love of his life on June 16, 1947.
He was an avid skier, taking his wife and family all of the world to experience the snow covered mountains. He enjoyed golfing and loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter Jo-Ann of New Bedford, son Paul and wife Anne of Martha’s Vineyard, son Christopher and wife Jessica of Dartmouth and son Leonard “Skip” of Dartmouth. He was survived by 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his brother Gilbert Simmons and his oldest granddaughter Kelley Simmons Cordeira.
Leonard and his wife Theresa started Simmons Concrete Foundations in 1957, which is still currently being run by the 2nd and 3rd generation.
His three greatest joys in life were his wife, making her a Manhattan and Milky Ways.
His Funeral will be held on Friday, November 6th at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funneral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, November 5th from 4-8 PM.

Please practice social distancing and avoid any close contact. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guests to enter.
