Obituary

Moon, Donald Wayne of Brewster and Wellesley, MA. October 27, 2020. Beloved husband of Virginia (Wyatt) Moon with whom he shared 65 wonderful years.

Loving father of Elizabeth (Beth) Gillespie and Thomas of Wellesley, Carol DiTullio and Richard of Milton, Donald V. Moon of Brewster, and Kenneth Moon and Irene of Cape Elizabeth Maine. Devoted and proud grandfather of TJ Gillespie and Courtney of Walpole; Kristyn Gillespie and Frankie of Wellesley; Hana and Evan DiTullio of Milton; Oliver, Jonas and Sebastian Moon of Cape Elizabeth Maine. Cherished great grandfather of Ava and Tommy Gillespie, and Savannah Wellford. Pre-deceased by his sister Carol Jane Webber of Arizona.

Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on May 5, 1931. He was the son of Victor R. and Dorothy Belle (Boyd) Moon and grew up in Baldwin Township, Pennsylvania. He worked repairing typewriters until drafted to play professional baseball as a catcher for Youngstown, Ohio. His baseball career was interrupted by a call to service. He Joined the US Coast Guard in 1952 and served during the Korean War aboard the US Sorrel and US Cahoon. While stationed in Boston, he met the love of his life, Ginny at The Seaman’s Club. They were married in 1955 in Brookline, Ma.

As newlyweds they lived in Brighton for several years until moving to Wellesley on Morse’s Pond in 1957 where they raised their four children.

Don worked for United Carr Fastener in Cambridge, Boston Tool and Die in Newton and TRW Co, in Burlington, MA. After retirement he continued to consult for TRW Co..

While working full time and raising a family, Don attended Northeastern University at night for 8 years to earn a degree in Business Management.

He was a dedicated Wellesley resident, serving as an active member of the Lions Club for many years and as president in 1976. His life long love of baseball was continued in his roll as Little League coach for the Red Legs for the 1973-80 seasons. He was also Cub Scout Pack 140 Leader. An avid fisherman and boater, he spent many peaceful hours on Morse’s Pond, holding the record catch of a 8.5 pound bass. He was a creative and talented carpenter, plumber, electrician and all around handy man, building the many additions and upgrades to their home on the island overlooking the pond.

After living in Wellesley for 58 years, he and Ginny retired to Brewster on Cape Cod in 2015. There they enjoyed the sun and sea, cheering for the Red Sox and Patriots, and watching the grand and great grandchildren grow.

A visitation will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St. (Rt.16) Wellesley, on Friday, October 30, from 4-7pm. A private funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 31, followed by a private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley. In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s memory can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd. Waltham, MA 02452.
