Joel R. Teixeira, 91, of Dartmouth died October 26, 2020 peacefully at home.
He was the husband of Justina D. (Monteiro) Teixeira.
Born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde, son of the late Maria Rodrigues and Pantaleon Teixeira, he lived in Jersey City, NJ before moving to the Greater New Bedford area many years ago.
Mr. Teixeira was formerly employed as a merchant mariner with Exxon Corp. for 33 years until his retirement.
He was an avid champion pigeon breeder and a member of the Giant Runt Club of America.
Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Brian Teixeira of New Bedford, David Teixeira of Saugus and Rodney Teixeira and his wife Tina of Woodbridge, VA; 3 daughters, Maria DaRosa and Gina Hill and her husband Steve, all of New Bedford and Joan Gomes and her husband Allen of Dartmouth; a brother, Ronald Teixeira of Spencer, MA; a sister, Faith DeMiranda of Rochester; 10 grandchildren, Anthony Teixeira and his wife Vanessa, Duane Teixeira and his wife Sydney, Justina Perry and her husband James, Danielle Perry and her husband Quinn, Casey Gomes and his fiancée Kristi Newton, Jesse Gomes and his wife Nastassia, Kip Hill, Matthew Hill, Amanda Teixeira and Bria Lynn Teixeira; 2 great-granddaughters, Khadijah and Noelle; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Joel R. Teixeira, Jr.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 30th from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Due to occupancy limits at church, his Funeral Mass and burial will be private. Attendees must wear a mask and practice social distancing and avoid any close contact. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guests to enter. Capacity at the funeral home will be limited so there could be wait times outside the funeral home.
