Obituary

Brian Patrick O’Malley, 71, of Acushnet, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital on October 24, 2020 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith Barry O’Malley.

Born on March 18, 1949 to Matthew and Mary (O’Leary) O’Malley, Brian grew up in Fairhaven. He graduated from Coyle & Cassidy High School and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

At the age of 18, Brian began working summers at the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority and made this his fulltime career. He retired as a Captain in 2016 after 49 years of service.

Brian was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Acushnet and member of the Anthony Beach Association. He was an avid Patriots fan and enjoyed watching sports. More than anything, Brian enjoyed spending time with his family whom he loved, supported, and cared for with complete devotion.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his two daughters, Shannon Kearney and her husband Keith of Acushnet, Kerry Kagan and her husband Justin of Mattapoisett; his grandchildren, Molly Kearney, Colleen Kearney, Timothy Kearney, and Maggie Kearney; his brother, Neil O’Malley and his wife Bonnie of Gig Harbor, WA; his sister, Maureen Savard and her husband Jerry of Onset; and his brother-in-law, Rick Barry and his wife Sharon of Dartmouth. He is predeceased by his sister-in law, Jane Erwin and her husband Walter. Brian also leaves behind many special nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to all of the Palliative and Hospice workers along with the nursing staff at St. Luke’s Hospital who administered such compassionate care at the end of his journey.
