Captain George J. Edwards, 69, of New Bedford, formerly of Mattapoisett, died Sunday July 14, 2002 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Lucille R. (Mandeville) Edwards and the late Lorraine (Bruce) Edwards.
Born in Philadelphia, Penn., son of the late John and Margaret (Doll) Edwards, he had lived in Mattapoisett for most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett.
Captain Edwards was formerly employed as a fishing captain on F/V Dinah Jane and F/V Deep Waters until his retirement. He also served as a marine consultant for various law firms along the East Coast.
He was a member of the Retired Fishermen's Club and a member and former officer of the New Bedford Fishermen's Union.
Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, George J. Edwards, Jr., of Mattapoisett, Shawn F. Edwards of New Bedford and Douglas S. Edwards of Fairhaven; a stepson, Adam Amaral of Somerset; a brother, John Bruce Edwards of Bolivia, NC; 2 sisters, Margaret Brownell of Mattapoisett and Diane Edwards of New Bedford; 6 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late David Edwards.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett Thursday July 18, 2002 at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Anthony's Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday July 17, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
