Obituary

Urbano G. “Butch” Machado, Jr., 75, of Orlando, FL passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday September 23, 2020.

Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Urbano G. and Alice (Sheehan) Machado, he lived in Rochester before moving to Florida in 1987.

Butch was formerly employed as a painting contractor, commercial fisherman, and mortgage broker. He had owned and operated Swinging Things Hammock Shop in Kissimmee and worked as a golf assistant at Hunter Creek Golf Course in Orlando.

An avid golfer, he was a former member of the Whaling City Golf Course and Reservation Golf Course and various country clubs in Florida. He served in the Army National Guard for six years. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, where he was a stand-out athlete in track and field, specializing in the javelin. He was a great fan of the New England Patriots. Throughout his life he was involved in assisting various area charities. He was well-known as “the life of the party.” He shared many great memories with his extended family and friends in Florida. He enjoyed living his life of his own terms with all of them.

He is survived by his son, Michael P. Machado; his siblings, Judy Gobeil, Daniel Machado, and Thomas Machado; his grandson, Drew Machado and his girlfriend Mikayla; his great-grandson, Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late William Machado, Janice Machado, Elizabeth Sturgeon, and Randolph Machado.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday October 3, 2020 from 12-2 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Due to capacity limits, his funeral service and burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Attendees must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guests to enter.
