Edith Henderson Powell Burt, 93, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at The Orchard at Stone Creek in Hahira, Georgia.
Graveside services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Riverbend Cemetery in Irwin County, with the Rev. Steve Hand officiating.
Mrs. Burt was born November 4, 1926, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late John D. & Ethel Mayo Henderson. She was a graduate of Ocilla High School and earned her teaching degree from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She later earned her Masters degree from Valdosta State College. She was an educator for 43 years and began her teaching career in Savannah. She spent most of her teaching career in the Irwin County School system, serving as President, among other officer titles of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She taught at Irwin Academy, even serving as Head Master, later on moving back to Irwin County Schools, then on to CCA in Douglas, retiring from the Irwin County School System. Mrs. Burt formed china painting groups wherever she lived and was a very accomplished artist. She was invited to Guatemala to learn a particular gilding pattern for china. She traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as many countries across the globe, often times bringing an article that represents that country back for her students to see and discuss with their studies. Mrs. Burt was a well-known cook and was famous for her chicken and dumplings, pimento cheese, and apple tarts. She was a member of Mandarin Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, DeeDee & Rick Evans of Ocilla; son, Steve & Kim Powell of Hahira; grandchildren: Jamie & Pam Evans of Lorena, Texas, Jodi & Chase Lott of Tifton, Steven Powell & Abigail Wildman of Adel, Harlen & Kelsey Shackelford of Thomasville and Lee & Ginny Henry of Moultrie and Brittany & Andy Greene of Tifton; great-grandchildren: Jaelyn Evans, Kelsey Evans, Bowen Evans Lott, J.D. Powell, Bryson Henry, David Henry, Luke Henry, Madelyn Greene and Mckenzie Greene; and a sister, Betty John & John Currier of Mandarin, Florida. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Jimmy R. Powell and Ralph A. Burt.
