Chief Arthur T. Oliveira, 95, of New Bedford died September 20, 2020 peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital.
He was the husband of the late Jeanette E. (Caron) Oliveira.
Born in Fall River, son of the late Manuel T. and Aldina (C. Melo) Oliveira, he lived in New Bedford most of his life. He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Mr. Oliveira was formerly employed with the New Bedford Police Department for 35 years serving every rank including Chief until his retirement.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard LST 226 in the Pacific theater.
Mr. Oliveira was a former member of the Prince Henry Society and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed boating, dancing and he had a wonderful sense of humor. He also loved his winters spent in Florida, and time spent with his good friends on Wednesday's at Panera Bread.
Survivors include children, Arthur Oliveira and his wife Helena of Fairhaven, Michael Oliveira and Marcus Gallardo of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Janice Oliveira of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Stephen, Karen, Jeffrey and Jessica; and six great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Hayleigh, Matthew, Joshua, Logan and Anthony.
He was the father of the late Stephen Oliveira, father-in-law of the late Donna Oliveira and grandfather of the late Michael Oliveira.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday, September 26th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Burial with follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, September 25th from 4-7 PM. Please be advised that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there are strict guidelines that must be adhered to for the safety of everyone. You MUST wear a mask to be allowed entry to the services. Please practice social distancing and avoid any close contact. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guests to enter.
