CHICOPEE – John J. Smus, Jr., 76, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, August 21, 2020. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut on September 20, 1943, a beloved son of the late John J. Smus, Sr. and Rita (Mercure) Smus. He was raised in New Haven as a child and moved to Chicopee with his family in 1951, he graduated from Chicopee High School and had lived in Chicopee most of his life. He was employed as a mechanic at Hapco Auto Parts in Holyoke and had previously owned and operated J & H Variety Store in Chicopee for many years. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church and a member of the Elder Council 69 Knights of Columbus and a fourth degree member of the Father Daniel Doyle Assembly Honor Guard, all in Chicopee. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate of over 59 years, Helen G. (McClain) Smus. He also leaves his many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the McClain family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother, Roland Smus. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, August 31, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery in Chicopee. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
