Obituary

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Shel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A world renowned expert in the fields of infertility, in vitro fertilization and microsurgery, he built a successful OB-GYN practice in the San Fernando Valley beginning in the 1960s. A track jock in high school and college at NYU, Shel married Lila, the love of his life, in 1951 while a student at Chicago Medical School. Together, over 69 years of marriage, they raised three children. He is survived by Lila, his children Linda (Lorin) Fife, Gary (Karen) Schein and Karen Meron, his grandchildren Yoni (Kitt) and Ari (Heidi) Fife, Roni Meron (Chris) Nichols, Jason, Jennifer and Greg Schein, five great-grandchildren and his sister, Sylvia (Phil) Yedinsky. Shel, a resident of Oxnard since 1990, was proud of his service as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the 1950s and early 1960s, a world traveler, a committed Zionist, an avid skier and photographer, an active member of Temple Beth Torah of Ventura, and founder of a Magen David Adom chapter, among other accomplishments. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations in Shel’s name to the Jewish Federation of Ventura County or Temple Beth Torah of Ventura. Shiva minyanim will take place by Zoom. Graveside funeral services were officiated by Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller on Tuesday August 25, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura, privately due to COVID-19. Arrangements were under the direction of Michael Boyko Funeral Director of the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home, Ventura.
