Evelyn Lucille Tyson Morris, 89, of Ocilla, Georgia, passed from this life into her eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, August 16, at Pruitt Health in Ocilla, GA

Ms. Evelyn was born February 10, 1931 in Berrien County, Georgia, to the late Lory M. Tyson and Thelma Bell Rutherford Tyson. Her family moved from Berrien County to Irwinville, GA in 1935 and became one of the Irwinville Farm Project Families. When World War II started in 1942, the US government sold the farms to the families living on them and Evelyn’s father, Mr. Lory, paid for his 111.7 acres in full on April 3, 1950. She was only 4’ 11” but loved to play basketball when in high school. In those days students only went through the 11th grade to graduate and she did so in 1947 from Irwinville High School.
Ms. Evelyn was a homemaker when her children were young, however, in 1968 she began a career as a salesclerk at A. S. Harris Department Store in Ocilla where she worked over 30 years until the Harris family closed the business. Her customers to her were special and she delighted in helping them with the ‘styles of the times. She joined the Ocilla Primitive Baptist Church in 1962 and was a long-time member where she was very active in the Ladies’ Circle and president for several years. She joined Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church on April 7, 2013 right before the Ocilla Church closed. Madge Roberts, Evelyn’s friend was already at Brushy Creek and they wanted to be together.
Camping with her family and friends, while her children were young, crocheting, reading, and making peanut brittle for friends were some of her favorite things to do. She loved watching and listening to the old country singers like Dottie West, Hank Snow, Chet Atkins, and Christy Lane. Madge Roberts, Ms. Pete Roberts and Ms. Evelyn spent many hours together watching her collection of DVDs’ that featured these singers and more.
Mrs. Evelyn is survived by her children: James Dennis & Dr. Lynne Morris of Blairsville, GA, Janice D. Morris of Fitzgerald, and Johnny D. & Elaine Morris of Ellijay, GA; her grandchildren: Scott & Sonya Morris of Ocilla, Stephen Morris & Shelley Bullington of Abbeville, Michael & Rhonda Todd of Mitchell, GA, Patrick Patterson of Lakeland, FL, Bill Patterson of Dalton, GA, Griffin & Ali Morris of Freeport, FL, Dr. Dana & Mark Warren of Nashville, GA, and Kerry & Kerry Rose Vick of Valdosta, GA; her great-grandchildren: Gabe Morris, Gracie Morris, Nathan Todd, Jacy Todd, Annely Todd, Hank Morris, Alec Morris, Lainey Morris and Linc Morris, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and father of her children, Jimmy G. Morris, a sister, Clara T. Payton, a brother Lory M. Tyson, Jr., and her adopted son, David Tipton.
The family expresses their deep appreciation to everyone at Pruitt Health – Ocilla for the wonderful care given to Ms. Evelyn during her time there.
