STANDISH - Elizabeth “Betty” Edwards, age 105, passed away on August 13, 2020, at her cottage on Sebago Lake.
She was born in Phillips, Maine on April 3, 1915, to parents Ethel and Charles Hammons. She spent her childhood in Auburn, graduated from Edward Little High School, and married an Auburn boy, Jonas H. Edwards. They moved to Lynn, Massachusetts to live and raise a family until Joe retired in the early ‘70’s, when they moved to their final home in Standish.
Although Betty never worked for pay, she never stopped working. In Lynn, she was President of Pine Hill Women’s Club, Lynn Public School Board and chair of Scholarship committee, Volunteer at Union Hospital. In Standish she was member of the Grandiflora Garden Club, Standish Historical Society, supervised monthly health clinics in Steep Falls, started a Volunteer program at the Jones Museum and also served on the board. She became involved in several Standish Town projects through the planning board or town council. She supported Standish Congregational Church with their purchase of a piano.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jonas, and her son, Dwight. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Edwards of Westbrook, two grandchildren - Brian Edwards of Raymond and Wendy Edwards of Sanford, and three great grandchildren - Rose Edwards of Bar Harbor, Dario Edwards and Dania Edwards of Sanford. She also leaves behind a niece, Mildred Rideout of Greene, and her daughter Cindy Rideout of Harpswell.
A memorial service will be planned for early September.
