Laconia – Robert “Bert” P. Thompson, 90, formerly of New Jersey, died on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at the Taylor Community.
Bert was born in Elizabeth, NJ, and attended the University of Louisville, where he met his wife of 65 years, Margaret “Maggie” Thompson. Upon graduation, Bert went on to fulfill his 4-year obligation with the US Navy, spending a large amount of time aboard naval vessels across the world. After his service, he, Maggie, and their three children settled mainly in NJ when they were not on overseas assignments with his employer, Exxon.
Years later in 1970, Bert and Maggie discovered and subsequently bought a house on Lake Sunapee in NH, where they ultimately retired after living in NJ for almost 50 years. The lake provided a place for family and friends to gather, swim, boat, ski and enjoy.
While living in NJ, Bert and Maggie were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Whippany, singing in the choir. Upon retirement, they became very active members of the Kearsarge Presbyterian Church of New London and continued singing in the choir.
Bert is predeceased by his wife, Maggie; his son, Rob; and his brother, George. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Korfhage; his daughter Kathy and son-in-law John Reardon; his daughter Libby and son-in-law Bob Makar; and daughter-in-law Beth Thompson. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kristin Makar, Keith Makar, Stephanie Burkey, Kara Reardon, Suzy Thompson, Ali Thompson and Erika Thompson.
Bert will leave behind a legacy which the family will all follow; love your spouse, love your children, love your grandchildren and love life itself.
A private Celebration of Life service for both Bert and Maggie will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Kearsarge Presbyterian Church of New London.
