Obituary

Barbara Walsh Gwinnup, 91, of Anderson died August 6, 2020 at her residence after a brief illness.

She was born October 19, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of J. Lee and Laura Perry (Chamberlin) Walsh. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from Purdue University; earned her master's from Ball State University; retired in 1986 as a first grade teacher at Twenty-Ninth Street School. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at Purdue; Tri-Kappa Philanthropic Sorority in Anderson; president of Victoria Guild at St. John's Hospital now Ascension in Anderson and a member of the Literacy Coalition in Anderson. While living in Florida, she was a mentor for 12 years in the After School Program at the Migrant Work Camp and active in the local St. Vincent de Paul Society.

After moving to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina in 2004, she volunteered at the East Cooper Community Outreach.

She is survived by her husband, Donald M. Gwinnup with whom she would have celebrated their 70th wedding Anniversary on August 25; five children, Donald (Jody) Gwinnup, Jr., Bruce Gwinnup, Stephen (Sheri) Gwinnup, Laura (John) Collier and Julie (John) Derucki; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, James (Bonnie) Walsh and Thomas (Sheila) Walsh; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents, her brother, John Walsh and a grandson, Liam Gwinnup.

A private family service will be held with a celebration of life at a later date.
