Lorraine D. (Poitras) Sousa, 91, of Salem, passed away peacefully at the Jeffrey & Susan Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody. She was the loving wife of the late Manuel “John” Sousa with whom she had shared 43 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Charles P. and Dora (Harris) Poitras. Lorraine devoted most of her life to the care of her family. As her children advanced in their school years, she decided on a second career as a sales representative and purchasing agent for technology companies until her retirement. Lorraine was a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Parish of Salem.
Lorraine liked nothing better than attending her family’s various celebrations including birthdays, religious rites of passage, graduations, and weddings. She also enjoyed quilting, travel, theater and dining out. She was a lifelong Red Sox fan and loved watching figure skating.
Lorraine is survived by her loving sons and daughters: Col (ret) Robert A. Sousa, USAF,and wife Lydia Todd of Peabody; the late Richard M. Sousa and wife Geraldine of Grayslake, IL; John D. Sousa and wife Catherine of Salem; Stephen M. Sousa and wife Christine of Newburyport; Laurie A. Green and husband Gregory of Salem; Thomas P. Sousa and wife Cynthia of Beverly; and Lisa J. Anderson and husband Ben of Salem. She also leaves seventeen adored and adoring grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings: Carol, Claire, Robert, and Charles “Bill” Poitras.
Due to the COVID pandemic, services will be private. A memorial mass will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a memorial contribution to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
