Louis A. “Louie” Oliveira, 90, of New Bedford passed away Sunday, July 19, 2020 after a short period of declining health.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Amario Joaquim and Joanna (Lopes Santos) Oliveira, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Louie was formerly employed as a fish lumper on the New Bedford waterfront until his retirement. He was a member of the Fish Lumpers Union, Local 1749.
He enjoyed visiting Martha’s Vineyard where he lived and worked as a young man. He was a recreational fisherman and an excellent cook, specializing in seafood and the use of Portuguese olive oil. His fish cakes were the best!!
An avid reader, he especially enjoyed books on history and culture, most notably those on Cape Verdean, African, Portuguese, Spanish, and Norwegian traditions. His favorite newspapers were the New York News and the Vineyard Gazette. He was a boxing fan and especially liked Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Sugar Ray Leonard.
He is survived by his children, Richard Moraes and his wife Gina of Acushnet and MaryJane Moraes Easton and her husband Dale of New Bedford; his longtime companion, Alice “Ju Ju” Moraes of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Richard Moraes II, Jonathan Louis Moraes, Dale C. Easton, Jr., and Danielle A. Easton; many nieces and nephews including Morris “Marty” Oliveira, Mary Jo Tolbert, Erie Cabral, and Valerie Cabral; great-nieces and great-nephews, including Aisha C. Costa; and several godchildren.
He was the brother of the late Antonia “Tanya” Oliveira, Manuel “Lay” Oliveira, Antone “Toi” Oliveira, Joaquim “Jack” Oliveira, John Oliveira, Mary Oliveira, and Rosaline O. Cabral, and uncle of the late Alice “Sha-Shi” Oliveira.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday July 23, 2020 at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visitation will be private.
