Horace “Ted” York, 88, of 544 Province Rd., Belmont died Saturday, July 13, 2002 in the Lakes Region General Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born in Northumberland, NH on August 3, 1913, the son of George F. and Jessie (O’Meara) York.
A talented drummer, following his graduation from Groveton High School he formed a band known as “ Ted York & His New Yorkers” in southern Connecticut. He later relocated to Littleton NH, where he remained for 44 years.
Mr. York enjoyed a successful career in the insurance field and was employed as the manager of the Littleton office of the Prudential Insurance Company. Following his retirement, he spent many years in Pompano Beach FL. Four years ago he moved to Belmont to be near to his family. He continued to work everyday for his grandson, Allan Gilbert Builders, even though he was approaching his 89th birthday.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Laconia and had been a long-time communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Littleton. Mr. York held membership in the VFW and the Elks Club, both in Littleton. He also was a member of the Littleton Council of the Knights of Columbus.
He was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Jennie (Ingalls) York in November 2000 and by his brother, Max K. York.
Family members include a daughter, Michelle Gilbert of Belmont; two sons, David W. York of Deerfield Beach FL and John A. York of Belmont; 8 grandchildren;7 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a brother, Rex York of Northumberland NH; a sister, Theo Ricker of Woodsville NH; nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. on Monday from 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 30 Church St. on Tuesday at 9 AM. Rev. Gary Kosmowski, Pastor was the celebrant. Burial followed in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Littleton . Timothy C. Molan and David L. Furber were the funeral directors.
