Trudy Marie (Alves) Fatula, 68, was born on July 7th, 1951. She passed away peacefully on June 26th, 2020 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family at her home in New Bedford.
Mrs. Fatula lived locally her entire life. She graduated from Apponequet Regional High School, before taking her talents to Bridgewater State University. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, and continued on that path to enjoy a powerful and productive career as a teacher in the New Bedford Public School System. She taught various grades throughout her tenure (spanning 36 years), but her passion and professionalism was best on display at the Kindergarten level. She enjoyed working with young children, and was undoubtedly a catalyst in their lives. Once established, Mrs. Fatula took pride in acting as a resource for younger teachers, and was incredibly helpful in that regard. The impact she had on her students, colleagues, and the community as a whole is immeasurable.
She was intelligent, caring and competitive. Over the years, she enjoyed the company of many close friends. Trudy loved the Sox, a good book, roast beef grinders from Raffa’s, making 4 bids, multiple ringers in jarts, and a cold Smirnoff Ice (or two). She embraced new experiences. She traveled up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and as far as Canada, following her sons playing baseball and basketball. She was a relentless supporter of them, on and off the playing surfaces.
Trudy is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Dale Fatula. She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Claire (Sabourin) Alves, and was one of eight children. Her siblings: Robert M. Alves, Carol-Ann St. Gelais, Brian M. Alves (deceased), Kenneth M. Alves, Kevin M. Alves, Terri-Ann Guilbeault, and Bruce M. Alves. Her sons and their wives: Marc and Brooke Fatula and Cory and Sandra Fatula. She adored her five grandchildren: Layla, Ella, Kendall, Claire and Colin. Her large family, including in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews was a constant source of joy in her life. Spending her final days with those she loved, the countless flowers, cards and well wishes were of great comfort.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, family and friends that acted as caretakers in some capacity. In particular, a special debt of gratitude is owed to Dr. Susan Kim, and her loyal sisters, Carol and Terri.
