OGUNQUIT- Paul G. Ersing
September 1, 1934- June 4, 2020
Paul G. Ersing, 85, passed away peacefully at his cherished home in Ogunquit, ME on June 4, 2020 after a heroic battle with cancer. Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Carol (Richter) along with two children, Diana Kelly and her husband Dr. Raymond Kelly of York, ME and Paul Ersing and his wife Laurie Ersing of Wells, ME. He also loved and will be missed by his three grandsons Ryan Kelly, Sean Kelly, and Paul Ersing. He also leaves two siblings, Hilda Lyon of Springfield, MA and Carl Ersing and wife Irene of Ludlow, MA. He also leaves two sisters-in-laws, Eva Ersing of Wilbraham and Maryalyce Ersing of Columbus, Ohio. He is predeceased by his parents Earhard Ersing and Luise (Waller) Ersing, brothers Hans and Walter Ersing, and brother-in-law Leroy Lyon.
Paul was a hard working husband and father, who provided a safe and secure life for his family. He was raised with a strong work ethic that started at a young age, delivering 200 newspapers a day at the age of 10. He was interested in carpentry in his teens and worked for a time with his uncle Hans, a cabinet builder. After working for a local builder, Paul set out on his own and built his first home to sell at the age of eighteen. A salesman at the local lumber company, Walter Richter, set his sister, Carol, up on a fortuitous blind date with the young builder, and their two lives became entwined. Paul continued to build two homes a year in the Wilbraham area, doing much of the work himself and built a camp on the lake for his young family in Sturbridge, MA where they made some of their fondest memories. During this time, he was involved in the Massachusetts National Guard for many years. His success building houses allowed him to begin the next phase of his life in Maine.
Paul and his family purchased the Towne Lyne Motel in Ogunquit, ME in 1976, after encouragement from his brother-in-law Denny Richter, owner of the Terrace Motel. The family successfully managed the motel for 22 years before selling and retiring.
Paul taught by example and his son sums up his dad best as a “perfectionist” who was known in Ogunquit for the impeccable lawn in front of his pristine motel. In retirement he had the best of two worlds. He lived in Ogunquit Maine for the summer season, and returned to Naples Florida for the winter. He kept himself busy maintaining his homes, lawn and flowers, and enjoyed playing golf, after being introduced to the game by his good friend, Gordon Lewis, of Ogunquit. He enjoyed his involvement with the Rotary Club of Ogunquit as well as his membership at the Cape Neddick Country Club and greatly appreciated being a part of those communities and treasured his friendships.
The family would love to thank the wonderful neighbors in both Naples and Ogunquit who gave so much of themselves to help in our time of great need. Marilyn, Marlene, Emile, Maureen, Fran and Mary Ellen we will be forever grateful for your assistance. Thank you to Hospice Of Southern Maine for your kind help and guidance.
He was so loved and will be greatly missed. The immediate family will hold a celebration of life for Paul in his home town of Springfield, MA in the near future.
If so desired, memorial contributions can be made to the Ogunquit Rotary Club, 36 Main Street, Ogunquit ME, 03907 or Hospice Of Southern Maine, 180 US Rt. 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
