New Bedford – Leonard Furtado, age 73, died on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, after battling ALS. He was the beloved husband of the late Cynthia (Morris) Furtado. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Anibal and Elsie Furtado.
Lenny, as he was more commonly called, worked for many years as a machinist in the Rubber Division at Acushnet Company. Later in life, he and his wife owned and operated Family Florist. After his retirement from the Family Florist, he worked part time redelivering newspapers for the Standard Times.
Lenny was an avid sports fan, and during his youth spent many days playing basketball at Ashley Park. He preferred college sports, especially basketball and football. Every Friday, until his illness prevented him, he would go to Newport Grand with his $5 bills, and play the slots. Lenny was also an animal lover and took awesome care of his many dogs.
He is survived by his children, Kimberly Furtado of New Bedford, Christopher Furtado and his wife Erica of Pembroke, Jennifer DeOliveira of New Bedford, and Kerri-Jean Brum and her husband Nicholas of Dartmouth; his 7 grandchildren, Alexandra Furtado, Jackson DeOliveira, Jayme DeOliveira, Drew Furtado, Brady Andrade, Kierra Furtado, and Connor Furtado; a sister, Maria Furtado of San Francisco; his two godsons, Scott Hebert and James Hebert; as well as many other family members.
He will be truly missed by all that loved and knew him.
Lenny’s funeral services will be private for the immediate family due to the mandated restrictions on gatherings in regards to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
