He remained a formidable opponent on the courts for many years. He studied piano and organ at Peabody Conservatory. As a young man he was the organist and choir director of The Church of the Redemption Episcopal Church on Towson Street in Locust Point to earn money for school. He liked to tell the story that when a choir member had a birthday, he wove the notes to "Happy Birthday" into the prelude and postlude. He was a member of St, Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church where he was an acolyte member of the Youth Group and sang in the Men and Boys Choir and mixed choir. He attended Baltimore Community College then Catonsville Community College, earning a degree in Construction Technology. He studied Norwegian at University of Maryland College Park. He served four years in the United States Air Force with three years in intelligence in Maine and one year in Viet Nam where he received several service medals and a Purple Heart. He married in 1968 and had two daughters. He was a resident of Loch Raven Village since 1975 and did extensive research to save Loch Raven Village Elementary School. His long career was in commercial construction and restoration. Some of his projects include the parking garage and dormitory of Peabody Conservatory, Maryland National Bank building, the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Baltimore, the former Blue Cross Blue Shield building at Joppa and Goucher Rds, the valuation of The Cloisters and St. Mary's Seminary, historic restoration of a home in Annapolis, the construction of First Mariner Bank buildings in Ellicott City and Loch Raven and Joppa Roads, the expansion of Springfield Mall in Springfield, Va. His last project was the Walgreens Building at York and Ridgley Rds.
He was active in his daughters' music and did the piano accompaniment for his daughter, Cynthia as she participated in numerous flute competitions and instructed his daughter, Kirsten as she studied piano. He also was the best helper when it came to math homework.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Riborg (Bitten) Norman (nee Erichsen), his daughter Cynthia Wathen and her husband Michael, his daughter, Kirsten Norman and her husband Ashley Johnson, also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was the kind of person who loved his daughters dearly and treasured his extended family.
It was his wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Rehoboth Church Preservation Society, Inc., c/o Christine Barber, 218 Summerby Road, Roper, North Carolina, 27970. In the course of his family research he discovered this little church that was built 167 years ago on land that belonged to his Great Grandfather Joseph Norman. Paul was so proud that this little church has been saved and preserved all these years.
Service and gathering will take place at a future date when it will be safe for people to come together again.
