Victor Giuliano Catricala, at 30 years of age, passed from this world on Thursday, May 14, at MGH, after complications from liver disease while waiting for a 2nd liver transplant. He received his first liver transplant at 3 months old. He leaves behind his grieving parents, Susan (Tocco) Catricala and Victor Catricala of Malden, his beloved brother Christian Catricala and partner Haley DeFilippis of Melrose, grandmother Elisa Tocco of Malden, his deceased grandparents Alfred Tocco of Malden and Nicola and Angela Catricala of East Boston, his Godparents Maria D’Orsi of Medford and Nick Varano of Lynnfield, his Godchild Lilly Curro of Stoneham and his best friend Richard Curro of Stoneham. Victor also has many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him dearly and will miss him always.
Victor was known by everyone who knew him as a sweet, kind and loving person. He never allowed the restrictions, pain, hospitalizations and constant doctors appointments as a result of his chronic disease to define who he was. He made the most of the cards he was dealt and did it with grace. He went to the gym 4-5 days a week, collected designer sneakers, and spent time with his many friends who adored him. He loved exotic cars, especially a Lamborghini. He had never picked up a wrench but could tell you every detail about those cars, especially the engine. He was an inspiration to everyone he met.
Victor was an animal lover, especially cats. We called him the Pied Piper because animals seemed to be drawn to his loving nature. His cat Frankie was the love of his life and would come to him when called, sleep with him and never leave his side when he was sick.
Victor’s health was overseen by his mother Susan, who astonished doctors with her medical understanding and accurate recall of Victor’s 30 years of medical history. Susan was Victor’s favorite person in this world and did everything in her power to make him happy and allow him to have as normal a life as possible. They were best friends. Susan made sure Victor knew he was loved beyond measure. They had an inseparable bond that helped both of them deal with the difficulties of his care and to cherish and appreciate every minute of every day.
Victor worked most recently for his godfather at Strega Prime, hand making pasta and specialty desserts, a job he really enjoyed despite how difficult it was for him to stand for long periods of time. He became quite the pastry chef and enjoyed the privilege of working with a world renowned pastry chef from France and a master chef from Morocco.
Prior to his passing on May 14, Victor had been in the ICU for 22 days. Due to restrictions as a result of Covid-19, his mother was the only person allowed to visit him and only 3 times. One visit was for 15 minutes on Mother's Day. He spent the remaining time alone. He needed his family, especially his mother, at that difficult time. It is not just the COVID patients who suffer but every person who is hospitalized. They are being denied compassionate access to their loved ones. To those who want to rush the careful opening of the state, please cooperate and follow the recommendations.
Thanks to the former Liver Center at Tufts Medical Center for providing the care that saved Victor’s life, and to the team at Massachusetts General Hospital for continuing his care. Special thanks to the intensive care staff on Blake 8,especially nurse Cathy, for their sensitivity and compassion during Victor’s final moments.
