Obituary

CHICOPEE – Charles J. “Chuck” Mayo, Jr., 90, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. He passed into Eternal Life at Vero Health and Rehab of Hampden surrounded by all the memories that he loved and cherished. He was born in Holyoke on February 26, 1930, a beloved son of the late Charles J. and Loretta S. (Hamel) Mayo. He was raised in Holyoke, graduated from Holyoke High School and had lived in Holyoke for many years before moving to Fairview in 1971. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and attained the rank of Airman Second Class. He was very proud of his military service and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed as a machine operator at the former Texon, Inc. in South Hadley. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a communicant, an usher and a volunteer at the former Immaculate Conception Church in Holyoke and currently was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He was a member of the Moose Family Center and the Elks Lodge # 1849, both in Chicopee. During his leisure time, he enjoyed tinkering around his back yard and his flower beds. He also enjoyed his yearly trips to England with his late wife, Beryl, to visit family and friends. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Beryl G. (Walpole) Mayo. They were married on March 28, 1952 at Saint Andrew Church in Norwich, England and were blessed with over 66 years of happiness together. He leaves his four loving children, Charlene B. Craigle and her companion, Wayne Gabbert, of Clancy, Montana, Jason C. Mayo and his wife, MaryAnn, of Chicopee, Tyler A. Mayo and his husband, Tom Crutchfield, of the Bronx, New York, and Bradley J. Mayo and his wife, Janet, of Chicopee; his four cherished grandchildren, Tana Clairmont and her husband, Joel, Cody Craigle, Jonathan Mayo and Christopher Mayo and his fiancee, Grace Ziobrowski; his three great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Gene and Shane Clairmont; his two dear brothers, Russell Mayo and his wife, Catherine, of South Hadley and Kenneth Mayo and his wife, Irene, of Agawam; his dear sister, June Dellapenna and her husband, Charles “Chachi” Dellapenna, of Las Vegas, Nevada; his dear sister-in-law, Christine Hague of England; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended members of the Mayo and Walpole families and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his loving son-in-law, William “Tim” Craigle; his two dear sisters and brother-in-law, Doris Joyal and her husband, George, and Elaine Mayo; his dear sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maureen Cossey and her husband, Derek; and his dear brother-in-law, Patrick Hague. Due to the current circumstances, his funeral will be private and his burial with United States Air Force Military Honors will be private at Notre Dame Cemetery in South Hadley. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date and time to be announced.
