Steep Falls - Hilda J. Carver, 97, died on May 9, 2020 at her home in Steep Falls. She was born in Standish on February 10, 1923, youngest child of George E. "Ed" and Bertha Wentworth Rackliff. She was a 1940 graduate of Standish High School.
Her college education was cut short by World War II, when she worked on airplane parts at Southworth Machine Co., and then Liberty Ships at South Portland Shipyard. She married Albert Tompson in 1945 and had three children, who were the joy of her life. In 1996 she married Nelson C. Carver, who predeceased her.
Hilda was endlessly curious and always eager to learn new skills. She made countless afghans, sweaters and mittens for family and friends. She also loved to play cribbage.
She is survived by children Nanci Stewart of South Portland, Mary Watson, and Charles Tompson and daughter-in-law Felicia Tompson all of Standish. Also 8 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at: www.mainefuneral.com
