Barbara Hathaway Meehan, of New Bedford MA, died May 5th 2020, at Our Lady’s Haven Fairhaven MA just months shy of being a Centenarian. She was married to her late husband Edward F Meehan Sr. from June 15th 1947 until his death July 7th of 2007.
Barbara was born in South Braintree MA, October 3rd 1920. She was one of 2 daughters born to Russell Hathaway and Marion McCrillis. She was a lifelong resident in the New Bedford area and had many friends and family.
Barbara was a graduate of New Bedford High School, New Bedford Tech, New Bedford Textile School and the Southeastern University of Massachusetts (SMU) with a Bachelors degree in the Humanities. She worked for Woods Hole Oceanographic. She was a former member at the Grace Episcopal Church. Barbara taught school as a substitute teacher in New Bedford and tutored special needs classes. She retired in 1989.
Barbara traveled extensively visiting, South Africa, Hawaii and Europe and was a member of the Saturday Club, the NB Chapter.DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and the Mayflower Society. Barbara was a contestant on the television program “Jeopardy” and watched it faithfully every day.
Barbara loved large family gatherings at the pond in Sassaquin, MA with all her family, extended family and friends present. She especially enjoyed her trips to Kokomo IN and Vermont to visit family and friends.
Barbara is survived by her six sons, their wives and families (which include 15 Great- grandchildren)

Granddaughter Elizabeth Meehan McCarran and her partner Josh Bauer who live in Bridgewater MA, 2 great grandchildren Hannah McCarran and Noah McCarran of Bridgewater MA., and grandson Charles Meehan who lives in Washington CA.
Douglas R Meehan and his wife Sharyn, who live in Fairhaven MA. . and granddaughter Jamie Lynn Meehan of Fairhaven MA. and 1 great granddaughter Tayla McCormick
Thomas W Meehan and his wife Elaine, grandchildren Daryl Langer, Deryk Meehan and wife Jessica, Darcy Tetreault and husband Jason, Dayna Motta and husband Jason, Dyana Meehan, and 6 great grandchildren, Justus Meehan. Austen Buck, Calleigh and Corbyn Meehan and Finnegan and Loxley Tetreault. _
Kenneth R Meehan, Acushnet MA and his son Kevin who lives in Rhode Island.
William M Meehan (Bill) and his wife Nancy, who live in Kokomo Indiana, grandson Russell and wife Holli Meehan, granddaughter Mary and husband Greg Jay, and 6 great grandchildren, Everett, Emmett, and Edithe Meehan, Lily, Oliver, and Daisy Jay.
Russell C Meehan and his wife Diane and their daughter Abby who live in New Bedford MA.
Barbara is also survived by her late sister’s (Eugenia Hathaway Evans) children: nephew Dave Evans and his wife Tammy Walters (VT) , niece Wendy Fleury (VT) , great nieces Emily Fleury (OR) and Jackie Fleury (VT) and great great nephew James ( VT) , Dawn Comtois and her husband Luc (VT) and great niece and nephew Sarah Hofer (MA) and Christopher Hofer (USAF active).
Barbara is also survived by her sister-in- law Ruth Coleman of South Boston MA.,
and Ruth’s children ( Barbara’s nieces) Nancy, Kathy and Mary Ruth Coleman.
She was predeceased by her parents, Russell Hathaway and Marion McCrillis, her husband Edward F Meehan Sr., Her sister Eugenia (Jean) Hathaway Evans of Jericho VT and her grandson Kenneth Meehan Jr. and 2 nephews Curt Evans and Jack Coleman
We wish to say a special thanks to Our Lady’s Haven, Fairhaven MA for the compassion they had for Barbara and the excellent care for the past several years.
A private burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery.
