Jean Griffin Dent, 84, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Monday. May 4, 2020, at Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia.
Private graveside services will be held.
Mrs. Dent was born January 31, 1936, in Ocilla, Georgia, the only child of the late Claude & Laura Roberts Griffin. She lived in the community all of her life and graduated from Irwin County High School. Mrs. Dent received her Bachelor’s degree in music from Wesleyan College and her Bachelor’s degrees in math and library science from Valdosta State University. She also held a Master’s degree in Education. Mrs. Dent was a teacher for the Irwin County Elementary School and later became the school librarian. With her husband’s encouragement, she obtained her pilot’s license at the age of 40. She was a devoted wife who cared for her husband for many years during his extended illness. She was a member of the Ocilla United Methodist Church where she played the organ for 35 years.
She is survived by her son, Greg Dent & Chrissy of Ocilla and a daughter, Paige Dawson & Tom of Hawkinsville; four grandchildren: Laura McDonald & Jeffery, Kevin, Dawson, David Dawson and Wesley McGill; great-grandchildren: Addison Woodard, Savannah McDonald, Hudson McDonald, Jaxson Dawson and Callie Dawson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Walter “Bill” Dent.
