Retired Boston Police Officer John F. Mahoney, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at the CHA Everett Hospital. He was 91 years of age.
John was born in Boston on February 6, 1929, a son of the late Daniel J. Mahoney and Bridget F. (O'Rourke) Mahoney. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. He entered into the United States Army on July 18, 1951 and served his country with pride and honor during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1953 with the rank of Sergeant. John joined the Boston Police Department in 1957 and was assigned to Station 9 in Dudley Square section of Boston and the Area A District where he retired serving his beloved Charlestown community. He retired in 1991 following 34 years of dedicated service to the City of Boston. John was a proud Townie, family man, and parishioner of St. Mary's Church. He loved cooking for family gatherings and enjoyed his schnauzer dogs. John was a member of the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, Boston Police Patrolman's Association and the Boston Police Emerald Society.
John is the beloved husband of the late Clara M. (DiIanni) Mahoney. He is the devoted father of Patricia Marshall and her husband David, Annemarie Hasanen and her husband Pertti, Elaine "Lainie" Sheehan and her husband Kieran, Eileen Mahoney, John Mahoney, and Thomas Mahoney and his wife Patricia. He is the loving Papa to David, Charlie, Benjamin, Christopher, Patrick, Laura, Martin, Anthony, Tommy, James, Julia, and to his great-granddaughter Logan. He is the beloved brother of the late Margaret Driscoll, Mary Barone, Helena Dever, James Mahoney, Charles Mahoney, Daniel Mahoney, and Francis Mahoney. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
