Janet (Jan) Lindsey Johnson, 92, lifelong resident of Winthrop, died of complications from the COVID-19 virus on May 1, 2020, at the Eastpointe Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Chelsea. Jan grew up in the Winthrop Highlands, and was very active in the daily life of the town she loved. In her youth, she and her dear sister Lorraine performed on local stages as “The Lindsey Sisters.” They had the good fortune to perform with Rosemarie Clooney, and counted Abbott and Costello among their friends. In their later years both were members of Winthrop Playmakers and performed in many plays together, with Lorraine playing lead roles. Jan was a familiar face to many in the town, holding jobs at Rand Jewelers, CVS, and the election polls. She was a long-time member of the former Union Congregational Church, and on Saturdays she helped at the church’s Thrift Shop. Jan was very involved with former Cub Scout Pack 78 and former Boy Scout Troup 78, which were sponsored by the Winthrop Elks. All her life she kept in touch with her old neighbors from the Highlands, enjoying many get-togethers through the years at the Winthrop Arms. Many years ago, Jan came across a poem in the town library titled “Winthrop By The Sea.” She showed it to a few people, and the title later became a town slogan. Jan spent the last years of her life in the care of the Eastpointe Rehabilitation Center in Chelsea.
Jan is survived by son Don and his wife Kate, son Mark and his wife Ann, and son Rick and his wife Laura. She leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren including Danielle, Kimmie, Devin, Lindsey, Shardai and Luke. She was the loving Aunt of Charlie, Cyndee, and Paula. Mom’s/Grandma’s/Aunt Janet’s radiant smile and sparklingly eyes will always be etched in our hearts. She had a big heart and always cared about others first, whether family, friends or strangers.
Jan’s family is very grateful to the care given to her at Massachusetts General Hospital, Cambridge Health Alliance Everett Hospital and to the nurses, doctors and health aides at Eastpointe.
Funeral Service and burial will be private.
