Obituary

Robert R. Monteiro, 69, of New Bedford died July 9, 2002 at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation for New Bedford after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Ann M. (Barros) Monteiro, and son of the late Joseph and Jenny (Rose) Monteiro.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he was formerly employed by the City of New Bedford Sanitation Department for many years until his illness.

Mr. Monteiro served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the Army of Occupation Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; 4 sons, Robert Adam Monteiro of Leominster, Richard Monteiro of New Britain, CT, Vern "Eddie" Cardoza of New Bedford and Allan "T.T." Monteiro of East Wareham; 3 daughters, Robin Offley Atkinson of Dorchester, Donna Offley Johnson of Wareham and Alana "Poopsie" Monteiro of New Bedford; a brother, Manuel Monteiro of Roxbury; 2 sisters, Elsie Santos of Roxbury and Jeanette Farrar of Greensboro, NC; an aunt, Dorothy Campbell of New Bedford; an uncle, John King, of New Bedford; 3 godchildren, Ronnette Barros, Charlene Mendes and Desiree Cruz, all of New Bedford; 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Willard Monteiro, Edward Monteiro, Joseph Monteiro and Margaret Simms, and grandfather of the late Allan Monteiro, III and Lolita Larrissa Monteiro.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Saturday, July 13th at 9 AM.

Visiting hours Friday, July 12th 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.
