On Saturday, April 25, 2020, Stephen Katchmar, husband of the late Dorothy Katchmar (nee Hermann) passed away peacefully at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center following a fall at home. Stephen was born on January 4, 1924, one of nine children born to Dmitro and Anna (nee “Koza”; also “Kozier”) Kaczmar in Mayfield, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Mayfield High School in 1942 and moved to Baltimore as a young man, where he met his beloved wife, Dorothy. They married on November 26, 1944. He worked as a ship fitter at Bethlehem Steel’s Fairfield Shipyard for two years before enlisting in the Army in January 1945. He was discharged in August 1946 as a Private First Class, Headquarters Company, The Quartermaster School in Camp Lee, VA. After his discharge, he became a fireman with the Sparrows Point Fire Department, in which he served until joining the Baltimore City Fire Department in 1953. He was honored as Firefighter of the Year by the Hamilton Lions Club in 1965. In 1950, he and his wife bought a home in Northeast Baltimore, moving later to Cub Hill in 1968. He retired as a Baltimore City fireman in 1983. Steve’s home was his castle, and he loved nothing more than doing home improvement projects and working on his lawn. On weekends, he enjoyed going out for meals and excursions with family, watching football, and for many years, enjoyed keeping fish and dogs, and exploring the Chesapeake Bay in his boat. He is survived by his sister Olga Melnick of Totowa, NJ, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial for immediate family only will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Gardens of Faith Cemetery. A memorial dinner will be planned in future subject to COVID-19 restrictions. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jacksonville VFC and/or Fallston VFC.
