Ilene Carpenter Young, 85, the beloved wife of the late Dr. John R. Young, passed peacefully in her daughter's home surrounded by her two children. She went to be with her husband of 62 years on April 24, 2020.
A small graveside gathering will be held in her honor on Thursday, April 30th at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton, GA where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Her nephew, Dr. James E. Carpenter of Tifton, will lead the family in prayer and remembrance of the beautiful life she lived.
Ilene grew up in rural Dale County, Alabama and graduated High School from Ozark, Alabama. Prior to John and Ilene marrying, she held a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Washington DC from 1954-1960. Ilene was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tifton for over 50 years where she was active in many activities including Sunday School, volunteer work and the FBC Handbell Choir. Ilene was gracious and giving with her time and enjoyed participating in the Pink Ladies program at the hospital, making greeting cards for the sick and shut-ins as well as delivering meals to the elderly through the local Meals on Wheels Program.
Born on November 1, 1934, Ilene was the daughter of the late James A Carpenter, Sr and Malinda Bess Carpenter. She is preceded in death by her brother Junior Carpenter and his wife Elmina and her sister in law Millie Carpenter. She is survived by her two brothers Clifton Carpenter and his wife Rachel and Gerald Carpenter. She is survived by two children; her son Jim Lee Young and his wife Pam of Raleigh, NC; her daughter, Malinda and her husband Phil O'Brien of Gainesville, GA; 9 grandchildren and their spouses, Kristen Sappe and her husband Michael; Samantha Vice and her husband Jon; Dallas Peek and his wife Alli; Candice Young, Tyler Haire, Casey Haire, Ryne Haire, Katie O'Brien and Haley O'Brien and five great-grandchildren; Presley Vice, Lane Vice, Raylan Sappe, Vanna Peek and Demi Peek.
